Fairness, a critical part of the success of our clan heritage, is baked into our neurology. (Ask any three-year-old.) When we take value from others without a corresponding contribution, it violates, consciously or subconsciously a basic part of our human connections.
What happens if a human being loses all sense of meaning in life? Each of you can answer that question for yourself. For most of our clients, meaning is foundational for a happy, productive life. We know that those who suffer from depression often feel that life is hopeless and without meaning.Â
Our model for a fulfilled life includes delivering value to others. This bonding, connection, feedback, and community satisfaction are meaningful to many. For some, this is a spiritual value that transcends temporary pleasure. If money is a Certificate of Appreciation, then the more money you make, the more value you deliver, the more satisfaction you feel about your life. Think about the power of money in this context.Â
Now, let’s look at gaining money without delivering value. Ask yourself, on some level—even a subconscious level—does the person who gets this money recognize that they are receiving value without delivering value? How does this impact their identity? How does this impact their feeling of worth? How does this impact their behaviors?Â
In our model, receiving value without delivering value is acid to the soul. It cuts us off from a loving connection to our communities. Humans are designed to be connected. This disconnect can impact not only individuals, but communities and nations as well.
